Drogheda Brass Band is delighted to welcome back to the town two members of the world famous Cory Band to work with the band for its revamped Summer Sounds course.
Glyn Williams - a euphonium superstar and guest conductor for the weekend – will be joined by his wife and guest soloist Helen Williams, a flugel horn legend and widely regarded as one of the best in the world at her craft.
The Summer Sounds course traditionally was held over the space of a week, but, having recommenced with a highly successful three-day event and concert in 2023 in the Augustinian Church, this year’s event has been extended to four days to make the most of the guests’ time with the band.
This year’s concert will take place again in the Augustinian Church on Sunday 28th July at 5pm, with tickets available now from Eventbrite.
Helen Williams began playing the cornet at the age of 10 and joined The Marple Band in 1986 as principal cornet. She became the first female principal cornet to win the British Open Brass Band Championship title in its 149-year history.
In December 1999, she joined Foden’s Band as principal flugel horn soloist. In the summer of 2015, Helen was invited to take up the flugel seat at the Cory Band, subsequently becoming a part of the unprecedented grand slam band winning the European, British Open, National and Brass in Concert titles in 2016.
Glyn Williams was born in Aberystwyth, Wales, and began playing euphonium with Towyn Silver Royal Oakley and Menai Bridge.
Glyn was appointed as solo euphonium with the Foden’s Band in 1995, winning multiple titles along the way. He joined the Cory Band in 2015 and continued his winning ways, winning all the top brass band accolades in the UK and Europe.
He is also highly regarded as a musical director and guided the Marsden Silver Prize Band from 2004 to 2015 with great contest success. More recently he has been working with the Aldbourne Band, directing them to be South West of England Regional Champions in 2022.
Glyn and Helen Williams are regarded as brass band world royalty and anyone with an interest in hearing one of the top musicians in her genre should book their tickets now at www.bit.ly/summersounds24tickets
The band played at the Millmount birthday celebrations last Sunday to great acclaim. As always, it’s a very busy summer of engagements for the band, with gigs in Highlanes Gallery and Oldbridge House already confirmed.
